- ✓
- 食べ終わったら、洗ってください。
- Why
- 終わる attaches to the ます-stem.
- ✗
- 映画が見終わった。
- ✓
- 映画を見終わった。
- Why
- 見終わる is transitive like 見る; the object takes を. (映画が終わった = the film ended, without a stem.)
〜終える (書き終える) is a slightly more written/literary version with the same meaning. For things that end by themselves use the plain verb 終わる: 授業が終わった. The suffix form needs a doer: 授業を受け終わった. 〜終わったばかり (have just finished) and 〜終わるまで (until you finish) are handy combinations.
JLPT N4 tips
On the exam
- Check the stem: ます-stem + 終わる. Distractors use the dictionary or て-form.
- If the verb is a state (分かる, 知る, 住む, ある), 終わる is impossible; look for ようになる or another option.
