Common mistakes

  • ✗
    Why
To connect to すみません you need the て-form: てしまって.
  • ✗
(meaning 'I saw a good movie')
    ✓
    Why
てしまう adds completion or regret. A neutral, happy event does not take it unless you mean "I finished the whole film".
  • ✗
(in a job interview)
    ✓
    Why
In formal settings and in writing, use

Very often てしまった is just a softener that admits fault: 忘れてしまいました sounds more apologetic than 忘れました. With emotions, てしまう can mean "couldn't help it": 泣いてしまった (I ended up crying), 笑ってしまった (I couldn't help laughing). Future: 早くやってしまおう = let's get it done and out of the way.

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • Watch the connection form: before すみません or a second clause, てしまって is required; before ください / ます the て-form of the main verb must precede しまう.
