Do something to see what happens / what it is like.
〜てみる means "try doing" in the sense of "do it and see what happens". 納豆を食べてみる = try eating natto (to see what it's like). みる here is the verb 見る (see) but written in kana. It is not about effort; it simply says you do something as an experiment. It conjugates like 見る: てみます, てみたい, てみてください, てみた.
