〜ようとする "try to / be about to": ようとする is an attempt that may fail before it even starts (開けようとしたが開かなかった). てみる means you actually did it, to see the result.

〜てみる "try doing": 〜てみる means you actually did it to see the result (食べてみた = I tried eating it). 〜ようとする is only the attempt or the moment before; the action may not happen.
