〜たらどうですか "how about doing…? / why don't you…?"

tara dou desu ka

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

A gentle suggestion or piece of advice.

〜たらどうですか literally asks "if you did X, how would that be?" and is the Japanese "why don't you…?" / "how about…?". It offers an idea without pushing: 少し休んだらどうですか = "why don't you rest a bit?". The casual form is 〜たらどう? (or 〜たら? alone) and the very polite form is 〜たらいかがですか. It is only for advising other people, never for describing your own plans.

Friendly advice to friends, colleagues and customers when the listener seems stuck or unsure. Shops and service staff use 〜たらいかがですか to recommend something. Among close friends 〜たら? alone with rising intonation is enough: 先生に聞いてみたら?

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • V-た + らどうですか: 休んだらどうですか
  • Casual: V-た + らどう? / V-た + ら?: 相談したらどう? 聞いてみたら?
  • Polite: V-た + らいかがですか: 一度ご覧になったらいかがですか
  • Often with てみる: 〜てみたらどうですか (why don't you try…)
  • No negative form: use 〜ないほうがいい to advise against something

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    私は明日、休んだらどうですか。
    ✓
    私は明日、休もうと思います。
    Why
たらどうですか advises another person. For your own plan use ようと思う or つもりだ.
  • ✗
    お酒を飲まなかったらどうですか。
    ✓
    お酒を飲まないほうがいいですよ。
    Why
There is no negative たらどうですか. Advise against something with ないほうがいい.
  • ✗
    休むたらどうですか。
    ✓
    休んだらどうですか。
    Why
The pattern needs the た-form: 休む → 休んだ + ら.

The pattern usually appears after a condition or reason: 〜なら / 〜から / 〜ので、〜たらどうですか. Repeating the suggestion, or using it with someone who did not ask for advice, can sound pushy. One suggestion is enough. 〜てみたらどうですか ("why don't you try…") is the most common combination in real speech.

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • If the blank is followed by どうですか / いかがですか / どう?, the verb must be in the たら form. Distractors offer the dictionary form + たら or the て-form.
  • When the sentence is a gentle recommendation ending in a question mark and the listener is a customer or friend, prefer たらどうですか over たほうがいい.
