〜必要がある "it is necessary to"

Objective necessity: "need to".

必要 means "necessity", so V-dictionary + 必要がある is "there is a need to do" = "it is necessary to". It states necessity as an objective fact rather than pressure on one person: ビザを申請する必要があります (you need to apply for a visa). The negative is 必要はない: 急ぐ必要はありません (there's no need to hurry). With a noun, use Nの必要がある or the な-adjective 必要だ: お金が必要だ.

Explanations of procedures, rules and requirements at offices, schools and workplaces, in notices and in slightly formal conversation. It sounds calmer and more objective than 〜なければならない. The negative 必要はない is a common, polite way to tell someone they can relax.

   N + は必要ない: the noun itself is unnecessary.

  Personal obligation, often with a feeling of pressure ("I have to"). 必要がある describes a need objectively. Compare side by side

  Advice, leaving the choice open. 必要がある says the action is required. Compare side by side

  "You don't have to" as permission. 必要はない says the same thing as a fact about the situation.

  The negative normally uses は; 必要はない / 必要はありません is the natural form.

必要がある is more common in writing and formal speech; in daily conversation people often say 〜なきゃ / 〜ないといけない instead. 必要 also works as a な-adjective before nouns: 必要な書類 (required documents), 必要なもの. 〜必要があるかどうか (whether it is necessary) and 〜必要があれば (if necessary) are useful combinations.
