〜出す "suddenly start / …out"

-dasu

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

(1) Sudden onset of an action (泣き出す, 笑い出す, 降り出す); (2) literal "out" (取り出す, 引き出す, 思い出す).

V-ます stem + 出す has two jobs. (1) Sudden start: 泣き出す (burst into tears), 笑い出す (burst out laughing), 降り出す (suddenly start to rain). The start is unexpected and not planned, so it often goes with 急に or 突然. (2) Literal "out": 取り出す (take out), 引き出す (pull out), 思い出す (recall, bring out of memory). In the "start" meaning it competes with 〜始める, which is neutral and can be planned.

Narrating surprises and sudden events (子供が泣き出した, 犬が走り出した), weather changes (雨が降り出した), and physical "out" actions (財布を取り出す). 思い出す (remember) is one of the most common verbs in Japanese.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • V-ます stem + 出す (sudden start): 泣く → 泣き出す, 笑う → 笑い出す, 降る → 降り出す, 走る → 走り出す
  • V-ます stem + 出す (out): 取る → 取り出す, 引く → 引き出す, 思う → 思い出す, 飛ぶ → 飛び出す
  • Conjugates as Group 1: 出します / 出した / 出して
  • Often with 急に / 突然 / いきなり in the "start" sense

    Why
    The physical "out" meaning belongs to 出す, not 始める.

泣き出す, 笑い出す, 怒り出す, 走り出す, 降り出す, 吹き出す are the most common "sudden start" verbs; learn them as units. Many 出す compounds are ordinary vocabulary: 思い出す (recall), 取り出す (take out), 見つけ出す (find out), 作り出す (create), 言い出す (bring up a topic). 〜出す in the "start" sense usually describes a change that surprises the observer; the speaker's own planned actions rarely take it.

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • 急に / 突然 / いきなり before the blank → 〜出す. A time-from expression (〜から) → 〜始める.
  • For 思い出す, distractors like 思い始める and 思い続ける appear; "remember" is always 思い出す.
