Meaning

knowing (the person), surely ...

〜ことだから means "knowing (that person), surely…". It takes a person the speaker knows well and draws a confident guess from their character: knowing how diligent he is, he'll be on time; knowing my kind mother, she'll forgive me.

話し言葉寄り, conversational. The noun is a person or group (彼・あの人・母・子供たち・あの会社), usually with a character adjective in front (真面目な・優しい). The second clause is a conjecture: だろう, に違いない, はずだ, きっと〜.

JLPT N2 tips

On the exam

  • Person + の + blank + conjecture (だろう・はずだ・に違いない) → ことだから.
  • Distractors: ことから, だけに, わけだから. If the noun before the blank is a thing or event, ことだから is impossible.
  • In 並べ替え, the trait adjective goes before the person, and のことだから stays together.
