By Nihongo PathUpdated
Meaning
relying on …; with … as one's only guide; depending on …
〜を頼りに means doing something while depending on X as a guide or support. 頼り (たより) is "something to rely on". Very often X is thin or unreliable: an old map, a vague memory, a single clue, moonlight. The sentence then carries a feeling of "with nothing but X to go on".
Used in both speech and writing, in narratives and everyday talk. Typical objects: 地図・記憶・光・音・手がかり・言葉・人の親切. When X is a person (親を頼りに), it means depending on that person for support. 〜を頼りにして is a slightly fuller form; 〜を頼りにする is the verb phrase "to count on".
Formation
V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.
N + を頼りに + VN + を頼りにして + VN + だけを頼りに ("relying only on")N + を頼りにする / している (to count on N)

Memory is a vague guide, which gives the sentence a nostalgic, searching tone.
彼女は月の光だけを頼りにして、夜道を歩いた。

Common mistakes
- ✗
- 彼は頭が良いので、優秀な頭脳を頼りに問題を解いた。
- ✓
- 彼は優秀な頭脳を持っているので、すぐに問題を解いた。
- Why
- を頼りに usually implies the support is slight or the only thing available. Using it for someone's own strong ability sounds odd.
- ✗
- 地図に頼りに村を探した。
- ✓
- 地図を頼りに村を探した。
- Why
- The noun takes を. The verb 頼る takes に (地図に頼る), but the noun phrase pattern is を頼りに.
- ✗
- 親を頼りに生きるべきだ。
- ✓
- 親を頼りにしないで生きるべきだ。
- Why
- Meaning error: を頼りに means depending on. If the intended advice is independence, the negative 頼りにしない is needed.
だけを頼りに and のみを頼りに are the most emotional forms: they paint a picture of someone with almost nothing to go on. With people (先輩を頼りに上京した), the meaning shifts to "counting on X for help", often when moving somewhere new. The adjective 頼りない (unreliable) and the noun 頼り share the same root; knowing one helps you remember the other.
JLPT N1 tips
On the exam
- In 文法形式の判断, a thin or single guide (地図・記憶・光・手がかり) followed by a searching or moving verb (探す・歩く・進む) points to を頼りに.
- Watch for をもとに as a distractor: choose をもとに when something is created from data, and を頼りに when someone depends on a guide while acting.
- In 並べ替え, だけ attaches before を頼りに: N だけ を頼りに.
