JLPT N1 tips

On the exam

  • A polite formula (お忙しい / お休みの) + blank + thanks or apology → ところを.
  • A verb of attempt (〜ようとした) + blank + passive → ところを; ところに is the distractor for arrivals.
  • ところで (concessive) never fits these contexts.
