〜までだ / 〜までのことだ

will simply …; merely did …

〜までだ has two uses depending on the verb form. (1) Vる + までだ: "if that happens, I'll simply do X" (a calm fallback plan): バスがなければ歩くまでだ. (2) Vた + までだ: "I merely did X" (playing down one's action): 当然のことをしたまでです. までのことだ is a slightly longer, softer version.

Both speech and writing. Use 1 shows resolve without drama; it often follows a conditional (〜なら・〜ば・〜たら). Use 2 is a modest reply to thanks or praise, or an explanation that one had no special motive.

   バスがないなら、歩いて帰るまでだ。

   バスがないなら、あるいてかえるまでだ。

   If there is no bus, I will just walk home.

   Resolve: if no bus, I'll simply walk. No complaint, just the fallback.

   失敗したら、もう一度やり直すまでのことだ。

   しっぱいしたら、もういちどやりなおすまでのことだ。

   If I fail, I will simply try again.

   までのことだ softens the same resolve.

   お礼を言われるようなことではない。当然のことをしたまでです。

   おれいをいわれるようなことではない。とうぜんのことをしたまでです。

   There is nothing to thank me for. I only did what was natural.

   Downplay: 当然のことをしたまでです is the standard modest reply to thanks.

4. 04

   反対されても、自分の信じる道を進むまでだ。

   はんたいされても、じぶんのしんじるみちをすすむまでだ。

   Even if people oppose me, I will simply follow the path I believe in.

   Resolve after a concessive ても.

5. 05

   別に責めているわけではない。事実を確認したまでのことです。

   べつにせめているわけではない。じじつをかくにんしたまでのことです。

   I am not blaming you. I merely confirmed the facts.

   Downplay: no hidden motive.

• 〜ばそれまでだ

  "If X, it is all over": an ending, not a fallback plan. Compare side by side

• 〜までもない

  "No need to": the action is unnecessary. までだ says the action is the simple choice. Compare side by side

• 〜しかない

  "Have no choice but to": similar to the resolve use, but sounds forced; までだ sounds calm and unbothered. Compare side by side

  Why

  The resolve meaning needs the dictionary form; the past form means "I merely did".

  For a modest reply about something already done, use the past form.

  それまでだ means "it is all over"; to express a fallback, name the action + までだ.

The resolve use expresses a matter-of-fact attitude: no need to worry, there is a simple next step. The downplay use is polite and humble; it often follows ただ or 別に. までのことだ is slightly gentler and more explanatory than までだ.
