〜べからず / 〜べからざる

bekarazu / bekarazaru

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

must not …; forbidden …; (adnominal) that must not be …

〜べからず is the old negative of べし and means "must not". At the end of a sentence it is the language of signs and rules: 立入るべからず (No entry). Before a noun the form is 〜べからざる: 許すべからざる行為 (an unforgivable act), 欠くべからざる存在 (an indispensable presence).

Sentence-final べからず appears on signs, notices and in proverbs; it is not used in normal conversation or letters. Adnominal べからざる is common in formal writing and speeches to describe something as unacceptable or essential. する becomes すべからず / すべからざる.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Vる + べからず (sentence end: signs, rules)
  • Vる + べからざる + N
  • する → すべからず / すべからざる
  • Set: 欠くべからざる (indispensable), 許すべからざる (unforgivable)

On the exam

  • Sign or rule + blank at the end → べからず. Blank + noun (行為・存在・権利) → べからざる.
  • Distractors: べく, べきではない, まじき. If the noun is 行為 after あるまじき, that is まじき; after 許す or 欠く, べからざる.
  • In 並べ替え, keep verb + べからざる + noun as a unit.
