なければなりません

Meaning

"must ~ / have to ~" (obligation).

なければなりません means "must / have to": 早く起きなければなりません "I have to get up early". Take the ない-form, drop the final い and add ければなりません: 行かない → 行かなければなりません. It sounds fairly formal; in speech you also hear なければいけません, ないといけません and the casual なきゃ/なくちゃ.

Duties and obligations: homework, medicine, deadlines, rules. Also the standard "I have to go now" (もう帰らなければなりません).

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • V-ない stem (drop い) + ければなりません e.g. 行かない → 行かなければなりません

    帰る (Group 1) → 帰らない → 帰らなければ.

  5. 明日までに宿題をしなければなりません。

    あしたまでに しゅくだいを しなければ なりません。

    I have to do my homework by tomorrow.

    する → しない → しなければ.
