Meaning
Japanese has paired verbs: the transitive (他動詞) takes an object with を and expresses someone doing the action; the intransitive (自動詞) takes が and expresses the change happening by itself. Choosing the right member of the pair is a core N4 skill.
Formation
自動詞: N が + verb (change by itself): ドアが開く, 電気が消える, 授業が始まる他動詞: (person は) N を + verb (someone acts): ドアを開ける, 電気を消す, 授業を始めるState: 自動詞 + ている (ドアが開いている = is open) / 他動詞 + てある (ドアが開けてある = has been opened on purpose)Preparation: 他動詞 + ておく (ドアを開けておく = open it in advance)Sound patterns: -aru/-eru (上がる/上げる), -u/-eru (開く/開ける), -reru/-su (壊れる/壊す), -ru/-su (直る/直す)
