〜に沿って / 〜に沿い / 〜に沿った

along (a line); in line with (a policy, wishes, a plan)

〜に沿って has two related meanings. Physically, "along X": 川に沿って歩く (walk along the river). Abstractly, "in line with X": following a policy, a manual, a customer's wishes, without departing from it. In both cases the idea is a line or guideline that the action keeps to.

The physical sense is neutral and common in speech. The abstract sense (方針に沿って / ご希望に沿った) is formal business and administrative language. に沿い is the written variant; に沿う / に沿った modify nouns.
