Meaning

たえる (堪える・耐える) means "to bear, to withstand". The pattern has three uses. (1) 〜にたえる = "worth doing, good enough for": 鑑賞にたえる作品 (a work worth appreciating). (2) 〜にたえない after 見る・聞く・読む = "too awful to look at / listen to". (3) 〜にたえない after emotion nouns = "cannot contain the feeling": 感謝にたえません (I am deeply grateful).
Formal, mostly written. Sense 1 appears in reviews and evaluations; sense 2 in reports about terrible sights or vulgar speech; sense 3 in speeches and formal letters (感謝・遺憾・喜び にたえない). Casual speech uses 見ていられない or 本当にありがたい instead.
