- Why
- The second half must show what was neglected. A pleasant result contradicts the meaning.
The second half often contains おろそかにする, 忘れる, 〜ないままだ, or 〜てこなかった. In apologies and reflections it softens blame: 忙しさにかまけて連絡が遅くなりました ("I got caught up in work and was slow to reply"). The verb かまける is rarely used outside this pattern; learn it as a unit.

On the exam
- In 文法形式の判断, a noun such as 仕事・遊び followed by a clause about neglect (〜おろそかに・〜なかった) points to にかまけて.
- Distractors include にかこつけて and にひきかえ. Check: is the person absorbed in X (かまけて) or using X as an excuse (かこつけて)?
- In 並べ替え, にかまけて attaches directly to the noun and the neglected item follows with を.
