Meaning
just because, simply because (with a regrettable result)
〜ばかりに means "simply because X, (a bad thing happened)". X is a single, often small cause, and the result is negative and regretted: 英語ができないばかりに、チャンスを逃した. The speaker feels "if only it were not for X". Never used for good outcomes.
Both speech and writing, mostly in narratives and explanations of misfortune. It sounds a bit dramatic; in neutral explanations use ので / から. The related 〜たいばかりに ("just because I wanted to") explains an excessive action.
