JLPT N1 tips
On the exam
- If a verb precedes the blank and the meaning is "without doing", choose ことなしに; if a noun precedes, choose なしに / なくして.
- Distractors: ことなく (also "without", but softer, and not used with は for impossibility) and ことには (a different pattern: ないことには).
- In 並べ替え, keep Vる + ことなしに together and place the negative main clause last.
