お〜になる / ご〜になる (respectful form)
o- V-masu ni naru / go- N ni naru
By Nihongo PathUpdated
Meaning
Generic respectful pattern for verbs without a special 尊敬語 form.
お〜になる is the general way to make a verb respectful when there is no special verb like いらっしゃる. Take the ます-stem, put お in front and になる after: 帰る → お帰りになる (the respected person goes home). For kango する-verbs use ご: 出発する → ご出発になる. It is more respectful than 〜(ら)れる, and you use it about the actions of customers, bosses and teachers, never about yourself.
Formal business talk, announcements and customer service when describing what a superior or customer does or did (お読みになりましたか, お使いになれます). Cannot be used with one-syllable stems (見る, 寝る, いる, 来る) or with する/来る themselves; those use special verbs (ご覧になる, お休みになる, いらっしゃる).
Formation
V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.
お + V-ます stem + になる: 帰る → お帰りになる, 書く → お書きになる, 使う → お使いになるご + する-verb stem (kango) + になる: 出発する → ご出発になる, 利用する → ご利用になるNot for one-syllable stems: 見る → ご覧になる, 寝る → お休みになる, 来る → いらっしゃるPrefer special verbs when they exist: 食べる → 召し上がる (not お食べになる)Potential: お使いになれる (can use)

この本をお読みになりましたか。
この ほんを およみに なりましたか。
Have you read this book?
読む → お読みになる; the question is about the listener's action.

先生は毎朝六時にお起きになるそうです。
せんせいは まいあさ ろくじに おおきに なるそうです。

Similar grammar and the difference
When a special verb exists (いらっしゃる, 召し上がる, ご覧になる), use it instead of お〜になる. Compare side by side
Lighter respect and easy to form (帰られる), but ambiguous with the passive. お〜になる is clearer and more polite. Compare side by side
The mirror image: same prefix, but with する and about your own action toward the person (お持ちします). Compare side by side
Common mistakes
- ✗
- お見になりましたか。
- ✓
- ご覧になりましたか。
- Why
- One-syllable stems (見, 寝, い) cannot take お〜になる. 見る uses the special verb ご覧になる.
- ✗
- 私は五時にお帰りになります。
- ✓
- 私は五時に帰ります。/ 失礼します。
- Why
- お〜になる raises the subject, so it can never describe the speaker.
- ✗
- お食べになりますか。
- ✓
- 召し上がりますか。
- Why
- 食べる has the special respectful verb 召し上がる, which is preferred over the generic pattern.
Respect ranking: special verb > お〜になる > 〜(ら)れる. In customer service, お〜になる and special verbs are the norm. The pattern also appears in お〜になれます (can use), お〜になった (did) and お〜になっている (is doing). Do not double up honorifics: ×お帰りになられる (お〜になる + られる) is a well-known error called 二重敬語.
JLPT N4 tips
On the exam
- The subject is the cue: 先生 / 社長 / お客様 + blank → respectful form. Then check whether a special verb exists before choosing お〜になる.
- Distractors include お + dictionary form + になる (×お帰るになる) and 二重敬語 (×お帰りになられる). Only お + ます-stem + になる is correct.
