お〜する / ご〜する (humble form)

o- V-masu suru / go- N suru

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

Generic humble pattern: the speaker's action that affects or is directed at a superior.

お〜する is the general humble pattern. It lowers your own action when that action involves or benefits the other person: 荷物をお持ちします (I'll carry your luggage), 後でご連絡します (we'll contact you later). Take the ます-stem, add お in front and する after; for kango する-verbs use ご + stem + する. Replacing する with いたす makes it even more humble: お送りいたします.

Customer service, business calls and emails, and any situation where you offer to do something for a superior. Because the action must be directed at the other person, it is not used for private actions like going home or eating (×お帰りします). Verbs with special humble forms (見る → 拝見する, 言う → 申す) use those instead.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • お + V-ます stem + する: 持つ → お持ちする, 送る → お送りする, 待つ → お待たせする (causative stem)
  • ご + する-verb stem (kango) + する: 連絡する → ご連絡する, 案内する → ご案内する
  • More humble: お〜いたす / ご〜いたす: お送りいたします
  • Only for actions that affect the listener; not for 帰る, 食べる, 寝る about yourself
  • Fixed phrases: お待たせしました, お願いします, お伝えします

Visual diagram

  1. Step 1持つcarry (plain)

Natural examples

  1. 荷物をお持ちします。

    にもつを おもちします。

    I'll carry your luggage.

持つ → お持ちする: carrying the listener's luggage, an action for them.

  2. 後でこちらからご連絡します。

    あとで こちらから ごれんらくします。

    We will contact you later.

Kango: ご + 連絡 + する. The contact is directed at the listener.

  3. 駅までお送りいたします。

    えきまで おおくり いたします。

I will see you to the station.

いたす instead of する for extra humility: お送りいたします.

  4. 会議の資料は、明日までにお送りします。

    かいぎの しりょうは、あしたまでに おおくりします。

I will send you the meeting materials by tomorrow.

送る → お送りする. The sending benefits the listener.

  5. お待たせしました。こちらへどうぞ。

    おまたせしました。こちらへ どうぞ。

Sorry to have kept you waiting. This way, please.

A set phrase: 待たせる → お待たせする, the humble form of the causative.

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    私はもうお帰りします。
    ✓
    私はもう失礼します。/ 帰ります。
    Why
帰る is a private action that does not involve the listener, so お〜する is wrong. お帰りになる (respectful) exists, but not the humble version.
  • ✗
    資料をお見しました。
    ✓
    資料を拝見しました。
    Why
見る has a special humble verb, 拝見する, and its one-syllable stem cannot take お〜する anyway.
  • ✗
    先生が荷物をお持ちします。
    ✓
    先生が荷物をお持ちになります。
    Why
お〜する lowers the subject. With 先生 as subject you need the respectful お〜になる.

The listener is normally the beneficiary: お手伝いします (I'll help you), ご説明します (I'll explain to you), お知らせします (I'll let you know). いたす is the humble する, so ご連絡いたします is more humble than ご連絡します. Both are standard in business. With いただく the pattern becomes a very polite request: お名前をお聞きしてもよろしいですか / ご説明させていただきます (lesson 73).

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • The subject is 私 / 私ども and the action is for a customer or superior → お〜する. If the subject is the superior, the same-looking option お〜になる is the answer instead.
  • Distractors put お on the dictionary form (×お持つする) or use the humble form for a private action (×お帰りします). Check both the stem and the beneficiary.
