Keigo verb table (尊敬語 / 謙譲語)

sonkeigo / kenjougo (tokubetsu na doushi)

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

Special verbs replace ordinary ones: 尊敬語 (respectful) raises the listener / third party; 謙譲語 (humble) lowers the speaker. 丁寧語 (です/ます) is plain politeness.

Japanese has a small set of special verbs for polite situations. 尊敬語 (respectful language) raises the person you are talking about: 先生がいらっしゃる (the teacher is here / comes / goes). 謙譲語 (humble language) lowers yourself: 私が参ります (I will go / come). The plain verb 行く, 来る, いる is replaced by a different word entirely. Only about fifteen verbs work this way; for all other verbs you use the patterns in lessons 70-72.

Talking to or about customers, bosses, teachers and people you have just met, especially in business, service and formal introductions (田中と申します). You use 尊敬語 for their actions and 謙譲語 for your own actions directed at them. Between friends and family these verbs are not used.

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    私は明日、会社にいらっしゃいます。
    ✓
    私は明日、会社に参ります。
    Why
いらっしゃる is respectful and can only describe other people. For yourself use the humble 参る.
  • ✗
    先生は何と申しましたか。
    ✓
    先生は何とおっしゃいましたか。
    Why
申す is humble (for the speaker). The teacher's words need respectful おっしゃる.
  • ✗
    社長がいらっしゃります。
    ✓
    社長がいらっしゃいます。
    Why
いらっしゃる, おっしゃる, なさる, くださる and ござる have irregular ます-forms ending in います.

Answering ご存じですか: say 存じております (I know) or 存じません / 知りません (I don't), never ご存じです about yourself. 〜ている becomes 〜ていらっしゃる (respectful) or 〜ておる (humble): 読んでいらっしゃいます, 読んでおります. In self-introductions: 田中と申します, 東京から参りました, よろしくお願いいたします are all humble forms.

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • First decide whose action it is. Subject = boss/customer/teacher → 尊敬語; subject = I / we / my company → 謙譲語. Then pick the special verb.
  • Watch for the irregular ます-forms in the options: いらっしゃいます and おっしゃいます are correct; いらっしゃります and おっしゃります are traps.
