〜(ら)れる (respectful passive form): The lightest respectful form (書かれる). It works with almost any verb but sounds less polite than special verbs.

Meaning
Special verbs replace ordinary ones: 尊敬語 (respectful) raises the listener / third party; 謙譲語 (humble) lowers the speaker. 丁寧語 (です/ます) is plain politeness.

Formation
