By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

A change from an affirmative state to a negative one: "no longer do / can no longer".

〜なくなる describes a change to a negative state: something that used to happen no longer does, or something you could do you can no longer do. 笑わなくなった = "he stopped laughing / doesn't laugh any more"; 読めなくなった = "I can no longer read". It is simply the negative form (〜ない) with い changed to く plus なる (become). It works with verbs, adjectives and nouns: 痛くなくなる (stop hurting), 好きじゃなくなる (stop liking).

Talking about changes in habits, health, ability and feelings: 最近、テレビを見なくなった; 年を取って目が見えなくなった; 前ほど好きじゃなくなった. Common in conversation and in stories about growing up or getting older. Neutral in register: fine in polite (〜なくなりました) and plain speech.

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • V-ない → なく + なる: 行かない → 行かなくなる
  • Potential + ない → なくなる: 読めない → 読めなくなる (can no longer)

  2. 目が悪くなって、小さい字が読めなくなった。

    めが わるくなって、ちいさい じが よめなくなった。

My eyes got worse and I can no longer read small print.

Ability lost: potential 読める → 読めない → 読めなくなる.

Similar grammar and the difference

  • 〜ようになる

ようになる is the change TO an affirmative state (話せるようになった). なくなる is the change TO a negative state. 〜ないようになる exists but is rare. Compare side by side

  • なくなる (lose / run out)

The verb なくなる after a noun + が means "disappear / run out" (財布がなくなった). After a verb or adjective it is the change pattern of this lesson.

  • 〜すぎる

No relation in meaning, but both attach to stems; do not confuse 食べなくなる (stopped eating) with 食べすぎる (eat too much). Compare side by side

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    最近、彼は笑わないなった。
    ✓
    最近、彼は笑わなくなった。
    Why
Change ない to なく before なる, just like an い-adjective (高い → 高くなる).
  • ✗
    目が悪くて、読まなくなった。(meaning: can no longer read)
    ✓
    目が悪くて、読めなくなった。
    Why
For lost ability use the potential form first: 読める → 読めなくなる. 読まなくなる only means "stopped reading" as a habit.
  • ✗
    薬を飲んだら、痛いじゃなくなった。
    ✓
    薬を飲んだら、痛くなくなった。
    Why
い-adjectives form the negative with くない, so the change is 痛くなくなる. じゃない is for nouns and な-adjectives.

〜なくなる is the everyday negative partner of ようになる. Say 食べなくなった rather than 食べないようになった. 〜なくなってきた stresses a gradual change still in progress: だんだん分からなくなってきた. Time cues often go with it: 最近, もう (〜なくなった = no longer), 年を取って, 〜てから.

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • If the sentence describes losing an ability (目が悪くなって, 年を取って), the answer is potential + なくなった (読めなくなった), not the plain negative.
  • Distractors often show なく in the wrong place (ないなった, なくてなった). The correct shape is always 〜なく + なる.
