〜てよかった / 〜ばよかった "glad that / should have"
te yokatta / ba yokatta
By Nihongo PathUpdated
Meaning
てよかった: relief or gladness that something happened. ばよかった: regret that something did not happen ("I should have…").
These two patterns look at the past with feelings. 〜てよかった = "I'm glad that…": something happened and it turned out well (来てよかった = I'm glad I came). 〜ばよかった = "I should have…": something did not happen and now you regret it (来ればよかった = I should have come). The difference is the verb form: て-form for what really happened, ば-form for what did not. The negatives work the same way: 行かなくてよかった (glad I didn't go), 行かなければよかった (I shouldn't have gone).
Everyday reflections: after a good decision (買ってよかった), after a mistake (もっと勉強すればよかった), comforting others (無事でよかった). 〜ばよかった is often said with a sigh and can end in のに. Both are neutral in register; add です for politeness (〜てよかったです).

JLPT N4 tips
On the exam
- Decide first whether the action happened. Cues like 実際に, 結果 or a following sentence showing a good result point to てよかった; cues like 後悔, のに, or a bad result point to ばよかった.
- Distractors mix the negative forms: なくてよかった (glad it didn't) vs なければよかった (shouldn't have). Read the second sentence to see which fits.
