〜すぎる "too much / excessively"

sugiru

By Nihongo PathUpdated

This form is also taught at JLPT N5, where it carries a different sense or register.

Meaning

Excess in degree or amount.

〜すぎる means "too much" or "too…". It attaches to the stem of verbs and adjectives: 食べすぎる = eat too much, 高すぎる = too expensive, 静かすぎる = too quiet. The result is a new Group 2 verb, so it conjugates like 食べる: すぎます, すぎた, すぎて. It always suggests that the amount or degree is more than it should be.

Complaints and regrets (飲みすぎた, 働きすぎだ), shopping (高すぎる), describing people (真面目すぎる), and giving reasons for a result with すぎて (食べすぎてお腹が痛い).

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

He is too serious and doesn't get jokes.

な-adjective + すぎて: the て-form introduces the result.

Similar grammar and the difference

  • 〜やすい

Also attaches to the ます-stem, but means "easy to" (食べやすい). すぎる means "too much". Compare side by side

  • とても / 非常に

とても高い = very expensive (could be fine). 高すぎる = too expensive (a problem).

  • 〜くらい / 〜ほど

These show degree by comparison (泣きたいくらい). すぎる judges the degree as excessive. Compare side by side

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    この問題は難しいすぎる。
    ✓
    この問題は難しすぎる。
    Why
Drop the final い of the い-adjective before すぎる.
  • ✗
    昨日、食べるすぎました。
    ✓
    昨日、食べすぎました。
    Why
Verbs attach with the ます-stem, not the dictionary form.
  • ✗
    この映画はおもしろすぎる。(meaning 'very interesting', as praise)
    ✓
    この映画はとてもおもしろい。
    Why
すぎる implies excess. As slangy praise it exists in casual speech, but in standard and exam Japanese use とても.

The noun form 〜すぎ is common in speech: 食べすぎだよ (you're eating too much), 働きすぎ (overwork). 〜すぎて + result is the most common frame in the exam: 甘すぎて食べられない. ない becomes なさすぎる: 時間がなさすぎる. Similarly for the negative of verbs in casual speech (やらなさすぎ), but the exam sticks to adjectives.

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • Check the form before すぎる: verbs use the ます-stem, い-adjectives drop い, な-adjectives attach directly. Options often show the wrong attachment (難しいすぎる, 食べるすぎる).
  • If the sentence ends with a bad result (お腹が痛い, 買えない, 眠い), すぎて is the likely connector.
