Lesson 96 of 110

〜ことができる "can / be able to"

koto ga dekiru

By Nihongo PathUpdated

This form is also taught at JLPT N5, where it carries a different sense or register.

Meaning

Ability or possibility, equivalent to the potential form but more formal/explicit.

V-dictionary + ことができる means "can / be able to": 運転することができます = I can drive. It says the same thing as the potential form (運転できます) but is longer and sounds more formal or careful. It is the form you see on signs and in announcements (写真を撮ることができません = you cannot take photos) and it is handy when a verb's potential form is awkward. With a noun, simply N + ができる: 日本語ができる.

Written rules, notices, formal speech, presentations, and any time you want to be clear and a little formal. In casual conversation the potential form is more common. Beginners also use ことができる to avoid conjugation errors.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • V-dictionary + ことができる: 話すことができる
  • Polite: ことができます; negative: ことができません; past: ことができました
  • N + ができる: ピアノができる, 日本語ができる
  • The verb before こと stays in the dictionary form (never potential or past)

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    私は日本語を話せることができます。
    ✓
    私は日本語を話すことができます。
    Why
The verb before こと must be the dictionary form; adding the potential doubles the meaning.
  • ✗
    昨日は仕事に行ったことができませんでした。
    ✓
    昨日は仕事に行くことができませんでした。
    Why
Past tense goes on できる, not on the verb before こと.
  • ✗
    私はピアノを弾くことができるがあります。
    ✓
    私はピアノを弾くことができます。
    Why
ことができる is complete in itself; do not add ある.

Signs and announcements prefer the negative: ここに車を止めることはできません (は often replaces が in negatives). For nouns, N + ができる is the normal form: 英語ができます; there is no 英語することができる. ことができる is safe with verbs whose potential is rare or awkward, and with long verb phrases.

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • If the blank is followed by ことができます, choose the dictionary form. Reject potential, past and ます-stem options.
  • When ことができる itself is an option among 〜たことがある and 〜ことがある, check the meaning: ability (can) vs experience (have done) vs occasional (sometimes).
