〜ことができる "can / be able to": Same meaning, but longer and more formal. It is common in writing, announcements and rules (写真を撮ることができません).

Potential form (〜られる / 〜える) "can do": Same meaning, shorter and more everyday. The object usually takes が with the potential (漢字が読める) but を with ことができる (漢字を読むことができる).

- Ability or possibility, equivalent to the potential form but more formal/explicit.
- Formation
V-dictionary + ことができる: 話すことができるPolite: ことができます; negative: ことができません; past: ことができましたN + ができる: ピアノができる, 日本語ができるThe verb before こと stays in the dictionary form (never potential or past)
私は車を運転することができます。
わたしは くるまを うんてんすることが できます。
I can drive a car.
ここでは写真を撮ることができません。
ここでは しゃしんを とることが できません。
