〜でございます / 〜でいらっしゃいます (polite copula)

de gozaimasu / de irasshaimasu

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

でございます = extra-polite (humble/丁重) form of です for the speaker's side or neutral things; でいらっしゃいます = respectful form of です for the listener / superior.

でございます is a very polite version of です. Shop staff, hotel receptionists and people on business phone calls use it to sound respectful and professional: こちらは会議室でございます (this is the meeting room), 山田でございます (this is Yamada speaking). Because it lowers the speaker's side or is neutral, it is used for yourself, your company and things. When the noun is the listener or someone respected, use でいらっしゃいます instead: 田中様でいらっしゃいますか (Are you Mr Tanaka?). ございます on its own is the polite form of あります.

Customer service (shops, hotels, restaurants, airports), business phone calls, formal announcements and ceremonies. You will hear it far more than you need to say it, but in a job in Japan you will use it daily. Among friends it sounds like a joke.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • N + でございます (polite です for the speaker's side or neutral things): 山田でございます, 三階でございます
  • N + でいらっしゃいます (respectful です for the listener or a superior): 社長でいらっしゃいます
  • ございます = polite あります: お手洗いは二階にございます
  • Negative: 〜ではございません; question: 〜でございますか / 〜でいらっしゃいますか

ございます also appears in fixed greetings: ありがとうございます, おはようございます, おめでとうございます. Past tense: でございました / ございました. Negative: ではございません (there is no でございません). い-adjectives have special polite forms with ございます (よろしゅうございます) but these are rare today; adjectives usually stay with です.
