〜んですが / 〜んですけど (prefacing a request or question)

n desu ga / n desu kedo

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

Introduces a situation before making a request, asking for advice, or seeking permission; softens the interaction.

〜んですが introduces your situation before you ask for something. 日本語を勉強しているんですが、いい本を教えてください = "I'm studying Japanese, and (so) could you recommend a good book?". The んです explains your background; the が is not really "but", it is a soft link that gives the listener a moment to prepare for the request. It makes questions and requests feel polite and natural instead of sudden. The casual form is 〜んだけど.

Asking for help, advice or permission at shops, offices, school and work: 道に迷ったんですが…, 予約をしたいんですが…, 来週休みたいんですが…. Very often the sentence stops at 〜んですが and the listener guesses the request. Used at every politeness level (〜んですけど, 〜のですが in writing).

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • V-plain / い-adjective + んですが: 迷ったんですが, 頭が痛いんですが
  • な-adjective + なんですが: 苦手なんですが
  • Noun + なんですが: 初めてなんですが
  • Followed by a request or question: 〜ていただけませんか / 〜てもいいですか / どうすればいいですか
  • Casual: 〜んだけど; written: 〜のですが

Natural examples

  1. 日本語を勉強しているんですが、いい本を教えてください。

    にほんごを べんきょうしているんですが、いい ほんを おしえてください。

I'm studying Japanese; could you recommend a good book?

Background (studying Japanese) + んですが + request.

  2. すみません、来週の金曜日に休みを取りたいんですが、よろしいでしょうか。

    すみません、らいしゅうの きんようびに やすみを とりたいんですが、よろしいでしょうか。

Excuse me, I'd like to take next Friday off. Would that be all right?

〜たいんですが prepares the listener before asking permission.

  3. あのう、道に迷ってしまったんですが…。

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    コピー機が壊れましたんですが、直していただけませんか。
    ✓
    コピー機が壊れたんですが、直していただけませんか。
    Why
んです attaches to the plain form (壊れた), not to the ます-form.
  • ✗
    初めてんですが、どうすればいいですか。
    ✓
    初めてなんですが、どうすればいいですか。
    Why
Nouns and な-adjectives need な before んです.
  • ✗
    予約したいですが、部屋はありますか。
    ✓
    予約したいんですが、部屋はありますか。
    Why
Without ん the sentence is grammatical but sounds abrupt; the explaining ん is what makes the introduction polite.

Trailing off at 〜んですが… is polite, not rude: it invites the listener to offer help. In casual speech use 〜んだけど: 明日忙しいんだけど、手伝ってくれない? Do not use んですが for pure statements with no request or question following; it would leave the listener waiting.

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • In 文法形式, the blank before ですが usually needs ん (or の) attached to a plain form. Reject ます-forms + んですが and bare nouns without な.
  • In listening and reading, 〜んですが signals that a request is coming; the next line is usually 〜ていただけませんか or 〜てもいいですか.
