〜つもりだった

I intended to… (but didn't) / I thought I had… (but I was wrong)

〜つもりだった has two uses. (1) With the dictionary form: an intention that was not carried out: 電話するつもりだったが、忘れた "I meant to call but forgot". (2) With the た-form: a mistaken belief about something you did: 鍵をかけたつもりだった "I thought I had locked it (but I hadn't)".

Explaining failures and misunderstandings in everyday speech and writing. Noun + のつもりだった = "I meant it as…" (冗談のつもりだった).

   昨日電話するつもりだったが、忘れてしまった。

   きのうでんわするつもりだったが、わすれてしまった。

   I meant to call yesterday, but I forgot.

   Unrealised intention: dictionary form + つもりだった.

   鍵をかけたつもりだったのに、開いていた。

   かぎをかけたつもりだったのに、あいていた。

   I thought I had locked it, but it was open.

   Mistaken belief: た-form + つもりだった.

   冗談のつもりだったが、彼を怒らせてしまった。

   じょうだんのつもりだったが、かれをおこらせてしまった。

   I meant it as a joke, but I made him angry.

   Noun + のつもりだった: 'meant as'.

   今日は早く帰るつもりだったのに、急な仕事が入ってしまった。

   きょうははやくかえるつもりだったのに、きゅうなしごとがはいってしまった。

   I was going to go home early today, but urgent work came up.

   つもりだったのに: frustration.

5. 05

   メールを送ったつもりだったが、下書きに残っていた。

   メールをおくったつもりだったが、したがきにのこっていた。

   I thought I had sent the email, but it was still in drafts.

   た-form: a mistaken belief.

• 〜はずだった

  An expectation or arrangement that failed (the plane was supposed to leave). つもりだった is the speaker's own intention. Compare side by side

  Similar 'was going to', slightly more tentative. Compare side by side

• 〜ところだった

  'Almost happened' (a narrow escape), not an intention. Compare side by side

  Nouns take の before つもり.

〜つもりで = 'with the idea of' (死んだつもりで頑張る = work as if your life depended on it). つもりだった is usually followed by が / のに / けど and the unexpected outcome. Related: 〜たつもりはない 'I never meant to' (悪口を言ったつもりはない).
