Meaning
(1) through, via (a means or intermediary); (2) throughout (a period)
〜を通じて / 〜を通して have two uses. As a means: 友人を通じて知り合った (met through a friend), 読書を通して学んだ (learned through reading). As a period: 一年を通して暖かい (warm throughout the year). The two forms are nearly interchangeable; を通して slightly stresses the deliberate use of the means.
Formal written and spoken Japanese; common in essays and reports. In casual speech people say 〜で or 〜の間ずっと. Both kanji forms are read differently: 通じて (つうじて) and 通して (とおして).
