Meaning

〜に反して means "contrary to X": the outcome goes against an expectation, a wish, a prediction, or a rule. 予想に反して、試合は簡単に終わった. The noun before it is abstract (予想, 期待, 意志, 規則); it is not used with people. 〜に反する + N means "Y that violates X" (規則に反する行為).
Formal written and spoken Japanese: news, essays, reports. In conversation people say 〜と違って or 〜のに. The に反する form is common in legal and administrative contexts.
