〜かいがある / 〜がい

Meaning

it was worth (doing); worth doing

〜かいがある means "it was worth (doing); the effort paid off", and かいがない means the effort was wasted. Vます + がい makes a noun meaning "worth doing": やりがい (a rewarding job), 生きがい (something to live for).

Both registers. Vた + かいがあって introduces the good result; Vた + かいがなく / かいもなく introduces a disappointing one. The noun form 〜がい is very common in job and lifestyle talk (やりがいのある仕事).

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

On the exam

  • If the first clause is an effort and the second is a good result, かいがあって is the answer; if the second is a failure, かいがなく/かいもなく.
  • Distractors: だけあって, おかげで. おかげで names an external cause; かいがあって names one's own effort.
  • In 並べ替え, the chunk がい appears as part of a noun like やりがい; do not separate it.
