Meaning
isn't it …?; you should …, shouldn't you?; (falling tone) don't …!
〜んじゃない is the spoken contraction of のではない. It has three jobs, told apart by intonation and form. (1) Rising: a soft suggestion or guess, "isn't it …?". (2) 〜んじゃないか: "I think perhaps …", used to make a proposal or a guess. (3) Falling, after a dictionary-form verb: a firm prohibition, "don't …!".
Casual and semi-casual speech, very frequent among friends, family, and colleagues. Polite version: 〜んじゃないでしょうか / 〜のではないでしょうか. The prohibition use (走るんじゃない!) is blunt and is used by parents, teachers, coaches, and in fiction.

- ✓
- 部長、この案でよろしいのではないでしょうか。
- Why
- Plain んじゃない is casual. To a superior use the polite のではないでしょうか.
- ✗
- 便利んじゃない?
- ✓
- 便利なんじゃない?
- Why
- な-adjectives and nouns need な before んじゃない, just as before の.
- ✗
- 食べたんじゃない!(intended: Don't eat it!)
- ✓
- 食べるんじゃない!
- Why
- The prohibition needs the dictionary form. 食べたんじゃない with falling tone means "I didn't eat it".
In writing, use のではないか / のではないだろうか; んじゃない belongs to speech and dialogue. んじゃないかと思う is a very common soft way to state an opinion: 少し高いんじゃないかと思います. The prohibition is stronger than 〜ないで and close to 〜な; use it only when you have authority over the listener.
JLPT N1 tips
On the exam
- In 文法形式の判断, casual dialogue with a suggestion (〜たほうがいいんじゃない) or a guess (〜んじゃないかな) points to んじゃない. Check for な after な-adjectives and nouns.
- For the prohibition, the verb before んじゃない must be the dictionary form; that is a frequent trap.
- In 聴解, listen to the intonation: rising = suggestion, sharp falling after Vる = prohibition.
