んです / のです

n desu / no desu

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

Explanatory ending — asks for or gives an explanation, background or reason; "it is that ~".

んです (written のです) is added to the end of a sentence to explain something or to ask for an explanation. It carries the feeling "the thing is, ..." or "is it that ...?". 用事があるんです "The thing is, I have something to do". Verbs and い-adjectives take んです directly; nouns and な-adjectives need な (休みなんです). It also softens a request when used with が: 道が分からないんですが….

Explaining why you can't do something, reacting to what you see (どうしたんですか "What's wrong?"), and leading into a request. Without a reason to explain, plain です is better.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.
