ので

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

"because ~ / since ~" — a softer, more objective reason than から.

ので means "because / since" like から, but sounds softer and more polite, as if the reason is simply a fact. Verbs and い-adjectives take ので directly (雨が降っているので); nouns and な-adjectives take なので (休みなので, 静かなので). It is the better choice when asking a favour or excusing yourself.

Polite explanations: leaving early, asking permission, apologising. Also very common in written notices.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • V/い-adj plain + ので ; な-adj + なので ; Noun + なので

  • Blank between a noun or な-adjective and ので → な. Between an い-adjective or verb and ので → nothing.
