がほしい

ga hoshii

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

"want (a thing)". The desired object is marked with が, not を.

ほしい means "want (a thing)". The thing you want is marked with が, not を: 新しいパソコンがほしいです "I want a new computer". ほしい is an い-adjective, so it changes like one: ほしくない "don't want", ほしかった "wanted". It is for things you want; for actions you want to do, use たい (lesson 43).

Talking about your own wishes: birthday presents, things to buy, what you'd like. Asking someone what they want: 何がほしいですか. Not used to talk about a third person's wishes in plain form (use ほしがっている).

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Noun + が + ほしい(です)
