Meaning
"There is / are"; "to have". あります for inanimate things (and plants), います for people and animals.
あります and います both mean "there is / there are" or "to have". The difference is what exists: あります for things that do not move by themselves (books, trees, buildings), います for people and animals. The place takes に and the thing that exists takes が: 机の上に本があります "There is a book on the desk". Negatives: ありません, いません.
Saying what is where (rooms, maps, directions), what you own (時間があります, 兄がいます), and asking whether something exists (ありますか).
