By Nihongo PathUpdated
Meaning
Casual particle covering と (quotation), という (called), は (topic/definition), and sentence-final hearsay ("they say").
って is the spoken shortcut. Mid-sentence it replaces と or という; at the head it replaces は as a topic; at the very end it means you heard it from somewhere.
Casual conversation only — avoid it in writing or polite speech.

Common mistakes
- ✗
- (in an email to a client)明日は休みだって聞きました。
- ✓
- 明日は休みだと聞きました。/ 休みだそうです。
- Why
- って is casual only. In polite or written Japanese use と / そうです.
- ✗
- 田中さんは来ないってを言った。
- ✓
- 田中さんは来ないって言った。
- Why
- って already links the quote to 言う; no extra particle is needed.
- ✗
- 漢字ってが難しい。
- ✓
- 漢字って難しい。
- Why
- Topic って replaces は / が; do not add another particle.
Sentence-final って often carries a hint of "so they say" or "I told you": 行かないって! (I said I'm not going!). って also shortens 〜と言っても (〜ったって) and 〜とは (〜って) in fast speech; recognise them in listening. Watch for だ before って after nouns and な-adjectives in hearsay: 休みだって, 元気だって, but verbs and い-adjectives attach directly: 来るって, 寒いって.
JLPT N4 tips
On the exam
- In 文法形式 with a casual dialogue, って is the answer where a formal sentence would have と, という or は. Register is the key: look for casual endings (〜てた, 〜んだ, よ/ね).
- In listening, sentence-final って means the speaker is reporting someone else's words; do not treat it as the speaker's own decision.
