〜というより

to iu yori

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

"rather than ~", "more ~ than ~" — replaces a description with a more accurate one.

You reject the first label, not the fact, and offer a better one. むしろ often follows for emphasis.

Refining someone's wording, in speech and writing alike.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Plain form + というより(も)
  • N / な-adj + (だ) + というより
  • Often 〜というより(も)、むしろ〜

Visual diagram

より vs というより
AspectWhat is comparedExample
〜よりTwo different things犬より猫が好きだ (I like cats more than dogs)
〜というよりTwo labels for the same thing先生というより友達だ (more a friend than a teacher)
〜というより、むしろ〜Same, with a stronger correction涼しいというより、むしろ寒い (not cool, rather cold)

Natural examples

  1. 今日は涼しいというより寒い。

    きょうはすずしいというよりさむい。

Today is cold rather than cool.

  2. 彼は先生というより、友達のような存在だ。

    かれはせんせいというより、ともだちのようなそんざいだ。

He's more like a friend than a teacher.

  3. 走ったというより、飛んだ感じだった。

    はしったというより、とんだかんじだった。

It felt less like running than flying.

  4. あの人は歌手というより、むしろ俳優として有名だ。

    あのひとはかしゅというより、むしろはいゆうとしてゆうめいだ。

He's famous as an actor rather than as a singer.

Similar grammar and the difference

  • 〜より

Plain comparison of two separate things (A is more … than B). というより replaces one description with a better one for the same thing.

  • 〜というか

Casual 'or rather…' used while searching for the right word; less clear-cut than というより.

  • 〜にしては

'For a…' — judges something against what you expect from its category, not a re-labeling. Compare side by side

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    犬というより猫が好きだ。
    ✓
    犬より猫が好きだ。
    Why
Dogs and cats are two different things being compared, so plain より is needed. というより is for two descriptions of one thing.
  • ✗
    今日は涼しいというより、暑い。
    ✓
    今日は涼しいというより、寒い。
    Why
The second description must be a more accurate version in the same direction, not the opposite. 'Cool' can be upgraded to 'cold', not swapped for 'hot'.
  • ✗
    彼は親切なというより優しい。
    ✓
    彼は親切というより優しい。
    Why
な-adjectives drop な (and usually だ) before というより.

むしろ often follows: 〜というより、むしろ〜. というよりも is a slightly emphatic variant with the same meaning. In conversation you will also hear 〜っていうより.

JLPT N3 tips

On the exam

  • Look for むしろ or a second clause that is a stronger version of the first (涼しい → 寒い). That signals というより.
  • If the two things compared are clearly different objects, the answer is より, not というより.
  • In 並べ替え the chunk というより usually sits right after a bare noun or adjective; join them first.
