Similar grammar and the difference

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    電気をつけたまま置く。(meaning 'leave the light on')
    ✓
    電気をつけておく。
    Why
The auxiliary is おく attached to the て-form, not the independent verb 置く after まま.
  • ✗
ビールを冷やしてある。(as a description of your own preparation action)
    ✓
    ビールを冷やしておいた。
    Why
てある describes the state; for the act of preparing, use ておいた.
  • ✗
    会議の後で資料を読んでおいた。
    ✓
    会議の前に資料を読んでおいた。
    Why
ておく prepares for something that comes later, so 'after' contradicts its meaning.

〜ておいてください is a common instruction from a boss or teacher. The 'leave as is' use often has にする: そのままにしておく, 放っておく ('leave alone'). In listening, 〜とく / 〜といて are the same pattern in casual speech.
