Similar grammar and the difference

  • 〜ようになる

A completed change of state or ability (話せるようになった). てくる shows the change as a gradual process.

  • 〜一方だ / 〜ばかりだ

Change continuing in one direction only, often negative. てくる/ていく are neutral. Compare side by side

  • 〜始める

Marks the start of an action; 降ってきた also marks the start but from the speaker's viewpoint.

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    これから寒くなってきます。
    ✓
    これから寒くなっていきます。
    Why
これから points to the future, so the change moves away from now: ていく.
  • ✗
    最近、太っていった。
    ✓
    最近、太ってきた。
    Why
最近 describes a change up to the present, which takes てきた.
  • ✗
    分かるようになってくる。(for a sudden realisation)
    ✓
    分かってきた。
    Why
The natural phrase for gradual understanding is 分かってきた; ようになってくる is redundant here.

Set expressions: 分かってきた 'I'm starting to get it', 慣れてきた 'getting used to it', 疲れてきた 'getting tired'. Literal uses: 行ってきます 'I'll go and come back', 買ってくる 'go buy and return'. With 生きる and 暮らす, ていく expresses a life going forward: 生きていく.

JLPT N3 tips

On the exam

  • Time words decide: 最近 / 今まで / だんだん…てきた; これから / 今後 / 将来…ていく.
  • If the sentence is about something suddenly starting (雨, 眠く, 腹が立つ), てきた is the answer.
  • Choices like ておく or てしまう are not about direction of change; eliminate them first.
