〜とともに

Meaning

together with; as ... (change), at the same time as

〜とともに has three uses: (1) "together with" (welcomed the New Year with my family); (2) "as… (changes), … also changes" (as I age, my strength declines); (3) "at the same time as" (a tsunami warning was issued with the earthquake).

書き言葉 and formal speech; in conversation と一緒に (use 1) or につれて (use 2) are more common. It follows nouns (家族とともに, 地震の発生とともに) or Vる (年をとるとともに). Both changes in use 2 must be gradual.

JLPT N2 tips

On the exam

  • Formal register + noun/Vる + blank meaning "with / as / at the same time" → とともに.
  • Distractors: につれて (only change), と同時に (only simultaneity), 一方で. If the sentence is "together with a person", only とともに fits among these.
  • Form questions test Vる + とともに (not Vた).
