〜たところ

ta tokoro

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

when I did ..., (I found that)

〜たところ means "when I did…, (I found that)…". The first clause is a deliberate action (consulting, calling, checking), and the second reports what was discovered as a result: when I consulted my teacher, I got good advice; when I called, he had already left.

書き言葉寄り and formal reports; in speech 〜たら does the same job. The second clause is a past discovery or outcome, not the speaker's next action or a command. It is common in business emails: 確認したところ、〜でした.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Vた + ところ
