By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

as far as (I know / can see / have heard)

〜限りでは means "as far as (I know / can see / have heard)". It limits a statement to the speaker's information source and admits that things may be different beyond it: as far as I know, he is single.

Both registers, slightly formal and careful in tone; common in reports and in polite conversation when the speaker does not want to overstate. The verb before it is one of knowing or observing: 知る, 見る, 聞く, 調べる, 覚えている, 私の知る限りでは.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Vる/Vた/Vている + 限りでは / N + の + 限りでは

    Why

The main clause often ends in a hedge: 〜ようだ, 〜そうだ, 〜と思う, 〜ない. 限り without では also works (私の知る限り) but では makes the limitation explicit. Formal reports use 〜の限りでは with nouns like 調査, 資料, 記録.
