〜ことがある (V-dict) "there are times when / sometimes"

koto ga aru (tokidoki)

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

Something happens occasionally.

Dictionary form + ことがある means "there are times when" or "sometimes": 朝ご飯を食べないことがある = sometimes I skip breakfast. It describes something that happens now and then, not regularly. Do not confuse it with た-form + ことがある (lesson 26), which means "have experienced". The form of the verb before こと tells you which meaning you have.

Talking about occasional habits (週末は一人で映画を見に行くことがある), warnings about things that occasionally go wrong (このバスは遅れることがあります), and product notices (色が変わることがあります). Often with 時々 or たまに.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • V-dictionary + ことがある: 遅れることがある, 行くことがある
  • V-ない + ことがある: 食べないことがある
  • Polite: 〜ことがあります
  • Frequency words: 時々, たまに (not 毎日 or いつも)

Similar grammar and the difference

  • 〜たことがある

た-form + ことがある is experience ("have done"). The dictionary form gives "sometimes". Compare side by side

  • 時々 / たまに

These adverbs alone also say "sometimes". ことがある adds the feeling that it happens only occasionally and perhaps unexpectedly.

  • 〜かもしれない

かもしれない is a guess about one case ("it might be late"). ことがある states that it happens now and then as a fact. Compare side by side

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    毎日、遅れることがあります。
    ✓
    毎日、遅れます。/ 時々、遅れることがあります。
    Why
ことがある means occasionally, so it clashes with 毎日 or いつも.
  • ✗
    日本へ行くことがありますか。(meaning 'Have you ever been?')
    ✓
    日本へ行ったことがありますか。
    Why
The dictionary form asks "do you sometimes go?". For experience use the た-form.
  • ✗
    遅れることがあった。(as a general statement)
    ✓
    遅れることがある。
    Why
Occasional events are stated in the present. The past form is only for describing a past period.

Notices and manuals use ことがあります to warn about possibilities: 商品の色が写真と違うことがあります. For habits that happen often, use よく + verb instead of ことがある. The negative pattern 〜ないことがある is more common than 〜ないこともある; both mean "sometimes not".

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • Look for 時々 / たまに and a present-tense sentence: choose the dictionary form + ことがある. If you see 一度 / 前に / 今までに, it is the experience pattern with the た-form.
  • Distractors often swap the verb form before こと. The meaning of the sentence (a general habit vs a life experience) decides which is right.
