- (1) N という N: "a … called …"; (2) clause + という + N (こと/話/意味): "the … that …"; (3) sentence-final という = hearsay/definition.
- Formation
N + という + N: 「さくら」という店Plain clause + という + こと / 話 / うわさ / 意味 / ニュースN + というのは = as for what is called NSentence-final 〜ということだ = it means that / I hear that
