By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

間 (あいだ) = throughout a period (continuous action); 間に = at some point within a period (momentary action).

間 (あいだ) is a noun meaning "the period between". 〜間 means "all through the time that…": the main action lasts as long as the period (夏休みの間、ずっと田舎にいた = I was in the countryside the whole summer). 〜間に means "at some point during…": the main action is short and happens inside the period (子供が寝ている間に、本を読んだ). So: 間 = the whole time, 間に = at one moment inside it.

Talking about what happens during periods: holidays, while someone is out, while a child sleeps. 間 pairs with continuous actions (ずっと〜ていた); 間に pairs with events that are over quickly (来た, 起きた, 電話した). Used in all registers. The verb before it is usually 〜ている or the dictionary form.

    Why

    ✓
    留守の間に、電話があった。
    Why
間 is a noun, so a noun before it needs の.

Look at the main verb: continuous (いる, 読んでいる, 働いていた) → 間; momentary (来る, 起きる, 終わる) → 間に. 間に often carries "before the chance is gone": 若い間に、いろいろ経験しなさい. The subject of the 間 clause takes が when it differs from the main subject: 母が料理している間に.

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • ずっと in the main clause is the signal for 間 (no に). A single event (誰か来た, 電話があった) is the signal for 間に.
  • Options often pair 間 / 間に with とき / ながら. If two different people do the two actions, ながら is impossible.
