Meaning

Without doing…

〜ずに is the formal, written version of 〜ないで: 朝ご飯を食べずに学校へ行った = I went to school without eating breakfast. It attaches to the ない-stem; the one irregular is する → せずに. It describes how an action was done (without X), not a reason.
